1985Live performance at Northwestern University, May 18, 1985
Photosynthesis was a performance with 3 dancers and percussionist.
The dancers wore suits that were wired with electronic sensors, a small sound synthesizer and speakers.
The sound was modified by their actions and by their position on the stage.
I developed several ideas about ventriloquism during the creation of this piece. Gestures that corresponded with sounds took on a spatial attribute. So even though the sounds all came from speakers mounted to the dancer’s heads they were able to create the appearance of throwing sounds across the stage, drawing with sounds, and capturing and holding sounds in their hands.
